My blogs have been a bit dark and dismal of late, so it’s nice to be able to focus on some good news for a while.
I’d just like to offer my congratulations to Paul Smith for his Queen’s Award for Enterprise: International Trade, which was presented to him yesterday.
Most people know Paul Smith as an innovative, cutting-edge Nottingham fashion designer but this award was for exports by his company, Paul Smith Ltd, and this is the second time he has received it. It recognises that fact that exports represented £70m of the company’s £126m turnover last year.
It has to be said that I’m not a fan of fashion but I bought a t-shirt from Paul’s first Nottingham shop in the early 70’s and I’ve followed his career with interest since then. So I’d like to say well done to him for his contribution to putting Nottingham on the international map.

I met his parents once. They used to live on Abbey Road in Beeston. I still have a letter from him thanking me for my letter about his dad who had just passed away, which was probably about 8 years ago now.
