In keeping with the title of my blog, I thought it was time for some real graffiti… and to ask for some help in solving an urban mystery.

There’s a skateboard park at the end of Hawksley Road in Hyson Green that is covered in graffiti. No surprises there. But this is not the scruffy tagging that often blights inner-city areas across the country; it’s much more in the genre of urban art. Not quite Banksy standard but still pretty high quality. Obviously created by people who know what they are doing (and with a considerable amount of talent), most of the flat surfaces of the ramps and other obstacles, as well as the walls around the park, are covered in well-executed and quite attractive (depending on your tastes, I suppose) graffiti.

Skate Park artI’m really interested in who it is that does this sort of stuff and I’m intrigued by the fact that it changes quite regularly. I didn’t notice this on my first couple of visits but now I pop in every now and again and each time some of the artwork has changed. Yet I never see anyone with a spray can in their hand.

So who does it and when? Is it one person or several… and is it random or part of some organised plan?

If you know, paint your answers on a wall somewhere in the city please.

  1. Some of it does improve a dull wall or area. I’m surprised that they just seem to appear, as if by magic, and no one sees he/she/them do it.

  2. Same here in Jhb…like little elves in the night!
